Treasure Island - Singapore

October 20-23, 2016

A weekend in pictures:

We stretched out a long weekend for Tim and visited the lovely island city/country of Singapore at the western tip of Malaysia.

Singapore is a young, wealthy country as the amazing, modern architecture demonstrates.

Didn't notice this bird until it scared the heck out of me

The "Bishan Ten" is a famous family of otters we were lucky enough to spot while we were sitting on a bench in Marina Bay at dusk.  They came charging out of a stand of pineapple trees, stopped to roll around in the sand for several minutes, then scurried off into the water, unperturbed by the gathered crowd.  (Read their story here: Bishan Ten )

The Super Trees of Gardens By the Bay:

Birds-of-Paradise are everywhere

We wondered why a huge crowd had gathered in front of The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, then realized it was a Pokemon Go stop.  People of all ages staring at their tablets and phones, some with multiple phones in hand.  Quite a startling phenomenon.

We saw several buildings painted in rainbow colors

Mt. Faber cable cars carry visitors to Sentosa Island,
home to Universal Studios theme park and other entertainments

We walked part of the Southern Ridges, a ten-kilometer stretch of connecting elevated trails from Mount Faber, along the Marang Trail,  across the curvy Henderson Waves Bridge, and over the awesome Forest Walk through the treetops of Telok Blangah Hill.

Huge bamboo
Caught a taxi back to the city, where we saw more amazing architecture.

A Starbucks in every port...

We took a forty-minute Singapore River Cruise from Clarke Quay to Boat Quay, Marina Bay and back again, passing under unique bridges and past modern skyscrapers, the Jumping Boys sculpture and the iconic Merlion.

The symbol of Singapore is the Merlion.  The fish body represents its origins as a fishing village, and the lion head is from the original name, "Singa Pura," which means Lion City.
